The culinary heritage of the island of Groix: exceptional flavors
The island of Groix has a rich culinary heritage closely linked to its maritime past. From 1863 to 1979, five renowned canneries produced the best canned Albacore tuna on the Atlantic coast. This industry deeply marked the identity of the island, to the point that the rooster of the bell tower of the church of the village was replaced by a tuna. The golden age of tuna fishing has seen up to 300 tuna boats moored in Port-Tudy and Port-Lay. The arrival of the train in Lorient in 1862 encouraged the development of canneries, offering work to several generations of islanders and mainland. At the beginning of the 20th century, Port-Tudy was the first French tuna port, with a fleet of more than 300 dundees. The island of Groix, with its fishing school, was famous for its offshore tuna fishing. This activity has punctuated the life of the island for more than a century, shaping its unique culinary and cultural heritage.
